Facebook is Great for Self-Esteem, Not

Facebook EnvyLast year, around Christmas time, I posted a simple message to my Facebook friends.  ”My Christmas wish:  that our lives are as great as we make them out to be on Facebook.”  It was intended to be tongue in cheek but the responses went deeper than I would’ve imagined and gave me pause about the effects of Facebook on self-esteem.

Interestingly enough, a study at Utah Valley University found that the more time college students spent on Facebook, the worse they felt about their own lives.  Why?  Because of Facebook envy – we may not like what we see and read when checking out our “friends;” all the photos of beautiful babies, interesting vacations and status updates with another personal best or job promotion.  It’s natural to compare ourselves to others but the constant self-promoting status updates can provoke feelings of depression, anxiety and envy, in adults as well as teenagers. Pintastic Pinterest for Nonprofits

Pinterest LogoIf I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times…I love Pinterest.  I can’t even count the number of hours I’ve spent tooling around on there!  And if you’re a nonprofit and you haven’t taken advantage of this platform, then it’s time to get on board and get pinning.

Pinterest seems to really lend itself to nonprofits as a great way to get your message out, grow your community base and drive traffic to your website and/or blog.  No, it’s not another social network to manage.  It’s different; you build a collage of images pulled while surfing the net.  You can “pin” directly from the web, upload your own images, or find something someone else pinned and repin it.  You gain traction when your pins get repined – it can generate lots of website traffic because it links back to the source of the image; your website or blog!  You can tweet your pins or post them to facebook for even more exposure.
